Finding the Door to Another Reality

Creative freedom as a way of giving back — on science and meaning, the simulation hypothesis, and a plan to begin building a simulacrum of myself with AI.

An open door in a ruined landscape revealing a green city beyond

I love to blog. This blog is about my creative freedom to soar, to experiment, to grow.

It’s more than just writing. I get to express myself in multiple media — pictures, paintings, virtual reality, audio, video, code, whatever form. Total expressive latitude, within the limits of my abilities and taste.

This is my way of giving back for the wonderful gift of life.

I believe in what science can achieve, in the beauty of art, in the compassion of humanity, in a good and lasting friendship, in understanding, in learning, in sharing what I learn. These are the things I value in the here and now.

Some of the things I have studied in the past involve the idea that we are inside a simulation — the simulation hypothesis. There is no way to really prove it or disprove it, or possibly even to escape it, although some think otherwise. How is that any different from a religion? Maybe, essentially, it isn’t. Again, I don’t know.

Regardless, we are reaching a point where the tools to simulate a subset of our current reality are becoming available. This is an opinion, of course, but with the rapid advances in AI, it seems we may be closer than ever to creating simulacra of ourselves. Will they be us? Not really — not at first. Will we create them and eventually integrate with them? Maybe. Some of us might.

Is this science fiction? At the moment, yes — but science fiction has a habit of prediction, sometimes not so far off from what reality actually becomes.

So I will try to create a simulacrum of myself. This is a long-term project. Some people are already doing it, or working on it. I recently used AI to create a specification document that expresses what I believe is necessary for the initial steps, so I will be gathering together the data needed to create one of me.

Crazy? Probably. But then again: meaning, purpose, creativity, experimentation. Even if I fail miserably, I’m sure I will have learned something.

Peace — and thanks for reading.
